Abstract
Monitoring the quality of the marine environment started just one century ago, to control the bacterial health of shellfish consumed live. Chemical quality was added in the 1970s. An observation network for toxic phytoplankton and associated toxins was set up ten years later. This system measures the state and evolution of environmental and health quality of coastal waters at the beginning of the 21st century.
