Abstract
This paper is an account of the work done on some ecological aspects of South Benfleet Creek. A description of the Creek is given in the Introduction and a brief account of the methods used in the second section. The ecology of the most important species found in the Creek is described. The Creek is most interesting with regard to the distribution of the two species of Corophium found there, one of which, Corophium arenarium, is a relatively rare species. It has been found that the composition of the substratum, and associated factors such as water content, is the dominant factor in determining the distribution of the two species of Corophium and of the other two most important species, Nereis diversicolorScrobicularia plana. The important distinctions between the habitat of Corophium volutator and Corophium arenarium have also been worked out.
