Abstract
The behavioural reaction of the estuarine gastropod Hydrobia ulvae (Pennant) to different substrata was investigated in relation to their differential abundance at a site on the north Norfolk coast which is characterized by a variety of sediment types. There were marked preferences for fine sediments both in regard to different natural sediments (the previous sedimentary background of the experimental animals having no influence on this preference) and to different particle size fractions isolated from a single natural sediment. This behavioural preference does not. however, account for their field abundance in the different sediments tested: Hydrobia occurred in greatest abundance in some of the local sandy sediments (median particle diameter ˜ 245 µm). These contrasting patterns are discussed. All attempts to alter the organic status of natural sediments gave substrata apparently repellent to the snails, and the mechanism underlying the preferences remains unknown; it is, nevertheless, capable, of allowing Hydrobia to discriminate between sands to which have been added muds in multiples of 5% of the total volume.
