Abstract
    Hydrobia populations of different shell phenotypes from three different ecological settings in Suffolk County, New York State, U.S.A. were compared on the basis of comparative anatomy and allozyme molecular genetics involving 30 loci and 49 alleles. These populations were compared with a population from New Jersey and two from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. On the bases of both data sets, it was concluded that one species was involved. Much variance in shell size was due to extreme parasitism. There are ecology-associated shell and body size differences. The extreme effects of parasitism on the snail populations is discussed. Nei's genetic distance D was was < 0.02. The Flax Pond populations is unique for degree of parasitism and the number of unique alleles. The FST statistic indicates a significant amount of heterogeneity. At least for the Flax Pond population, one could not reasonably attribute the result to genetic drift. The name H. totteni would have to be changed to H. truncata if topotypical H. truncata from the DELMARVA Peninsula was found to be conspecific with snails of this study.
