Abstract
Preliminary results are presented from the first survey of dinoflagellate cysts along the Portuguese coast. Surface sediments were collected from 29 sites covering a variety of coastal environments. Cysts of three main groups of toxic or potentially toxic dinoflagellates were found: I) Cyst type Gymnodinium catenatum - present along the whole coast, dominated assemblages by up to 68% in the SW coast; 2) Cyst type Pyrodinium bahamense - the first record of this species on the eastern side of the Atlantic Ocean - present in several sites along the coast, included a few specimens with apparently viable cell contents; 3)?Alexandrium - present along the whole coast, accounted for 8-31 % of cyst assemblages on the S coast; on the west coast tended to occur in low percentages with the exception of one site where it reached 43%.
