Abstract |
The importance of the Suez Canal as a migration pathway for sessile Indo-Pacific invertebrates is reaffirmed here by noting the following cheilostomatous bryozoans occurring in the eastern Mediterranean: Thalamoporella gothica (Busk) indica (Hincks), Celleporaria aperta (Hincks), Hippopodina feegeensis (Busk), Hippaliosina acutirostris Canu and Bassler. This faunule appears to be spreading northward along the Levant Coast. The distribution of H. feegeensis, a shallow water species ranging throughout the entire tropical Indo-Pacific and Western Atlantic Regions, is discussed in detail. Palaeontological data suggest that H. feegeensis gained access into the latter region by penetrating the Panamanian Corridor during the Tertiary. |
