Abstract
Since 1964 Atherina mochon, a sand smelt so far not recorded from the North Sea, has been caught in increasing numbers in the Veerse Meer (The Netherlands). Descriptions are given of A. mochon and A. presbyter, the latter being the common sand smelt of the Dutch coast.
