Abstract
It is possible to adapt at least temporarïly the sea-turtle Caretta caretta L. to tap water and the freshwater species Clemmys leprosa L. to sea water. In these conditions the osmoregulatory functions are unable to cope with the situation created. As a consequence there are important changes in the osmotic pressure of the blood. The relative slowness with which the observed modifications appear may be explained by the comparatively small surface of exchange available, the carapace and the integuments constituting an adequate barrier to the diffusion. The lack of efficient osmoregulatory mechanisms thus explain the distribution of the species studied. Therefore the presence of these species in unusual medium can only be fortuitous and always temporary.
