Abstract
The morphology and the way of working of the Weberian apparatus are summed up. The adaptative evolution of the skeleton of the anterior part of the benthic catfishes is described and its consequences on the Weberian apparatus sensu lato are emphasized. The characteristics of that region, though adaptative, may be used for systematical purpose, if the way of realization, and not the evolutive level, is taken into consideration; they must be compared with the other available data concerning any external or internal features. Out of the order Siluriformes, six South-American familles, the Bunocephalidae, Aspredinidae, Trichomycteridae, Astroblepidae, Loricariidae and Callichtyidae are clearly distinguished by the following peculiarities: the lack of the mesial ventral processes of the exoccipitals lying between brain and sinus impar by all the other Ostariophysi, and some modifications in the pars inferior of the labyrinths. The six families have got some other features in common they share with foreign species; moreover they show obvious common tendencies. Some questions about the relations inside the group and about its origin are discussed.
