Abstract
The possible adaptations to the oral incubation have been investigated by the way of osteological and myological studies of five species of Tilapia, including both substrate-spawners and mouth-brooders. The mouth cavity of the oral-incubator species so far studied is of greater volume than that of the substrate-spawners species. It is postulated that the oral incubation appeared at least twice in the genus Tilapia, and that the acquisition of such a comportment is possible without any previous or simultaneous morphological adaptation.
