Abstract
The last 15 years have seen a very rapid increase in the demand for earthquake resistant design of structures not only in the more seismic regions but also in the less earthquake prone areas of northwest Europe, where the engineering profession is being involved in an ever wider range of project types that require earthquake resistant design or construction. An increasing number of professionals are also becoming conscious of earthquake risk and require risk assessments made for them, even in lew seismic hazard regions, such as the North Sea and surrounding countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom) for such petrochemical installations as LNG and LPG storage, chemical processing plants, off-shore structures and nuclear power plants.
