Abstract
To demonstrate a systematic approach for establishing estimates of total seismic risk as associated with some well-defined geographical area and its objects, I will give a brief outline of the definitions and theoretical aspects as adapted by Keilis-Borok et al. (197M at the Institute of Physics of the Earth in Moscow in their approach to the problem. The systematic incorporation of all pertinent information bearing on the total seismic risk has resulted in a complex mathematical framework and a widely applicable model characterized by its generality. A computer version of the model is also available and is quite simple to adapt in a practical application as long as sufficient and reliable data is present. As a curiosity it might be mentioned that this approach has been adapted for the estimation of seismic risk associated with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway (BAM-project).
