Abstract |
In order to find a relation between algae and coral species, numbers of algae extracted from the soft parts and variations in concentration of their photosynthetic pigments are investigated. Averages of symbiotic algae/cm2 decrease as depth increases but their number shows fluctuations in each species of coral. Ratio of carotenoids/chlorophyl a seems uniform but chlorophyl c/ chlorophyl a decreases slowly with depth. This later relation is reversed in Agaricia grahamae (45 m). Average of pigments (chl. a and carot.) per cells of algae varies sufficiently between 9 and 30 m to distinguish two ecological populations in M. lamarckiana. Results/cm2/depth allows recognition of an ecological adjustement of symbiotic algae for each coral species. Ecological adaptation of coral symbionts is demonstrated by this method. |
