Abstract
It is argued that the decreasing priority given to training in identification skills has hampered the development of several biological disciplines. More emphasis should be given to this type of work. The importance of keys in acquiring the necessary skills is stressed, and a range of such aids, with methods for their construction, is described and discussed.
