Abstract
Whale killing in the Faroe Islands. About a small nation's struggle to maintain a more than a thousand year old tradition and the activists fighting against it.A philosophical walkthrough and facts, about the controversial subject also known as "The Grind".The Faroe Islands is a tiny country of rare beauty. The fantastic landscape and spectacular scenery attracts thousands of visitors every year, and they are all in awe by what they have witnessed. The Faroese are known for their hospitality and those who visit the islands usually return at some point. But there are also some, who come to the faroes with a different agenda, who want the world to see another part of this paradise on earth. An old tradition that has lived on for more than a millennium that has provided food for the people of this small nation, when there was no other hope. Sea Shepherd have decided that the Faroese no longer need to live by this custom, that whaling is outdated and unnecessary. That the whales suffer needlessly, so that the Faroese can kill for fun, only to honor this ancient "barbaric" tradition, and that after the killing is done, the whales are left to rot.The Faroese on the other hand, argue that any part of the whales that can be used, be it for consumption or otherwise, is certainly not wasted. Sea Shepherd use whatever means they have to discredit the Faroese, painting a picture of a sick barbaric culture, while the Faroese claim that Sea Shepherd are spreading lies and false propaganda. In this book you can learn the actual facts behind "The Grind", the laws concerning whaling in the Faroes and about the methods used by Sea Shepherd. This book is a must read for anyone with an interest in the subject of whaling, Sea Shepherd, or the Faroe Islands.
