Abstract
The evidence relating to the dating of new avian names from Vivarium naturae or the naturalist's miscellany is assembled and reviewed as are previous attempts to provide reliable dates. Although the overall framework for our understanding remains somewhat hypothetical this approach is necessary due to the limited internal evidence, but some corrections to current date usage are offered. The authorship of the scientific names is also discussed, as is the role of the Nodder family, and we conclude that Shaw should be considered the sole author. An appendix lists the first plate in each of the fascicles.
