Abstract
Over 600 molluscan species from Southern Africa are covered in detail. Most species have been illustrated in full colour, while over 200 supplementary text-figures emphasize fine details and diagnostic structures. Full descriptions, comparative notes and distribution data facilitate identification. Accurate nomenclature corrects many wrong or obsolete names currently (1982) in use. Particular emphasis is placed on the biology of the living creature and to this end field observations are given throughout. The introductory chapters and appendices provide background information on such topics as molluscan form and function, the history of collecting in Southern Africa, and the molluscan biogeography of the region. Other chapters offer guidance on the practical aspects of shell collecting.
