| Abstract |
Tha Authors inform about the first discovery of living specimens of Perna (Perna) picta (Born) in the Gulf of Palermo (Sicily), along the coast from Aspra to Capo Zafferano (about ten kilometers east of Palermo). This yellow-brown and greenish Mytilidae has entered the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean (West Africa) and had been recorded, up till now, as far as the Tunisian coasts. The Authors make some suppositions on the way this species may have reached Sicily and lay out its systematic position. On the ground of the examination of a large number of specimens of Perna picta and by comparison with some African specimens, the Authors make some remarks about the range of variability ot this species, including var. mauretanica Pallary. |
