Abstract
All ship simulators incorporate on.e or more mathematicar models ofthe ship. Little attention has to date been focussed on the requirementsof these models. This paper examines three types of ship manoeuvringmodel, using the Cardiff Ship Simulator, in a port evaluationstudy. It is concluded that for most simulation tasks it is fullyfeasible to use mathematical models which can be produced relativelycheaply and quickly.
