Abstract
The CO2-binding properties of the blood of Helix pomatia L., Homarus vulgaris M. E. and Cancer pagurus L. were investigated. No indications for the presence of carbonic anhydrase, nor for the binding of CO2 in any other form (carbamate f.e.) than in that of bicarbonate were found. Some pH-measurements on the bloods were made in the presence of different quantities of CO2, giving some information about the buffering capacity of the blood. The biological significance of the observed phenomena is shortly discussed.
