Abstract
    Sustainable potable-water production in the dune belt can be achieved by the integration of alternatiye fresh-water sources. Surface water, extracted after a short passage through the aquifer, and secondary sewage effluent would be used as the source for the production of infiltration water. By the use of membrane techniques this infiltration water should meet stringent standards and would be used to artificially recharge the unconfined aquifer. The production capacity of the water-collection areas in the dunes could increase while the natural-groundwater extraction could be reduced. The water table would rise and this would diminish the risk of salt-water encroachment under the dunes and enhance the ecological value of the dunes.
