Abstract
    This study focused on the distribution and composition of the zooplankton communities of two lagoons in the Po river delta, the Sacca di Scardovari and the lagoon of Caleri. Samples were collected monthly from March to December 1991 at both ebb and flood syzygial tides along a transect of stations located from the sea mouths to the most sheltered areas of the lagoons. In both lagoons, the three most abundant taxa, comprising 95-97 % of total zooplankton, were Copepoda (71-76%), Cladocera, mainly during summer, and Cirripedia larvae. Among copepods, Acartia tonsa was the most abundant species, especially in the inner part of both lagoons, with peaks during summer. Copepod species diversity diminished towards the inner stations, and richness variation was more pronounced than evenness variation. Multivariate analysis of data from both lagoons showed two clusters: one grouping inner sites, characterized by more lagoon conditions, and the other outer sites, indicating that the position of sampling sites was a more important determinant than the tidal phase. The features of zooplankton communities were similar in both lagoons: absence of freshwater forms, high summer densities at inner sites,and dominance of a single species.
