Abstract
In order to investigate large scale artificial recharge of groundwater in arid and semi-arid regions both technical problems related to infiltration capacity and environmental side-effects caused by large scale infiltration have to be studied. Great advantage can be taken from recent studies of natural and man-induced recharge in arid and semi-arid regions as presented for example at the Nato workshop held in Turkey in 1987. Scarcity of data, however, is a commonly encountered problem. One way suggested to solve this problem is Issar’s method of comparable hydrogeological provinces. Others are regionalisation techniques in combination with remote sensing.
