Abstract
Multifunctional flood defenses protect areas against flooding, butserve other functions as well. Although these types of defensescan be seen almost everywhere, they pose special technical andgovernance challenges. This book is about a unique interdisciplinary research programdeveloped to tackle some of the issues designers and managersof multifunctional flood defenses are confronted with, and also toprovide some practical solutions. The book discusses a variety ofcase studies, but also considers the difficulties involved in settingup an interdisciplinary study with PhD students from differentfields. Interviews with some of the end users and reflections byresearchers involved in the field make this book a ‘must read’ foreverybody who is involved in protecting societies against flooding.
