Abstract
    1. The distribution of Cd, Zn and Cu in the soluble fraction of liver and gills of eels adapted to seawater and submitted to chronic or acute Cd exposure has been studied.2. During chronic intoxication, most of the Cd accumulated in both organs is bound to metallothioneins.3. In the case of acute intoxication, only the liver accumulates Cd as Cd-thioneins.4. Metallothioneins are present in the liver of non-Cd-exposed eels but in lower amounts than in chronically intoxicated animals. They are principally in the form of Zn and Cu derivatives. In the gills, the metallothioneins do not exist in detectable amounts.5. The overall characteristics of metallothioneins isolated from eel liver are very similar to those of metallothioneins obtained from mammalian tissues.
