Abstract
Bycatch, an issue intertwined in the history of fishery science, has played variousmanagement roles within ocean fisheries over the past century. It did not, however, until the late 1980's and 1990's, become a featured component of the complex offishery science issues concerned with defining mortalities associated with target andnon-target fisheries. Bycatch literally burst from the gate and became a priority issuein fisheries research when it became increasingly evident that bycatch resulted in thecapture a variety of sealife and could result in the endangerment of non-targetedliving marine resources including turtles, marine birds and mammals, and in someinstances non-target species of fish. The following report provides a cursory historyof bycatch issues and progress being made towards a reduction in its capture andlowering of the discard mortality.
