Abstract
The period of 6 months from September 1998 to February 1999 is in Belgium a period of extreme precipitation. The monthly precipitation depths are at Uccle/Brussels, particularly in September 1998 and January 1999, higher than normal. The result for the whole period is a precipitation depth of 637,5 mm or 161 % of the normal precipitation. The precipitation causes very high water levels and discharges in the Flemish rivers. The paper describes the meteorological circumstances of the period September 1998 - February 1999 and gives a survey of the discharges for the same period in the Lys and Demer rivers. A comparison of this period with the last 30 years completes the study.
