Abstract
The origin of Species, published in 1859, divided the 19th century in a pre-darwinian period dominated by the determinism of Linnaeus and Cuvier, of which P.-J. Van Beneden was the representant in Belgium, and a post-darwinian era, for which Edouard Van Beneden became the most prestigious symbol in this country. This biographical text on the lives of father and son Van Beneden illustrates that important paradigm shift in science. An extensive bibliography of both scientists accompanies the text.
