Abstract
Detailed study of maps and other documents reveals that the historical to recent sedimentary evolution of coastal and shallow marine sectors of the Dunkerque area {northern France) results from the parallel or antagonistic effects of natural and human factors. The general consequence consists of both a sedimentary accumulation to the West associated with an erosion to the East, and a coastward migration of coastal banks associated with a retreat of eastern shores and dunes.
