Abstract
By an unfortunate combination of circumstances, “Pleurosigma aequatoriale" Cleve failed to be validly described, although it could have become a good species. The much later name P. diversestriatum F. Meister (1934) must, therefore, be used for this neglected but widespread marine diatom. It has been mistaken for the different species P. inflatum Shadbolt—which has P. naviculaceum Brébisson for a later synonym.
