Abstract
Direct measurements of yolk osmolality from oocytes and eggs of Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) shows for the first time that oocyte final hydration in marine teleosts is driven by a hyperosmotic yolk. An increase in the oocyte content of free amino acids, especially, but also of NH sub(4) super(+), K super(+) and Cl super(-) ions (but not Na super(+)) contribute to the hyperosmolality
