Abstract
Reproductive status of female summer flounder was assessed at the beginning (September) and the end (February) of the spawning season. Six ovarian stages were described based on the histochemical features of the most mature oocytes. A seventh ovarian condition was the presence of atretic follicles. Assuming that ovaries containing atretic follicles at the end of the spawning season were from females that spawned, length-frequency information indicates that some, but not all, age class 1 females were among the spawning population.
