Abstract
By measuring 20 physical, chemical, and biological parameters during a complete annual cycle, the authors studied the micro-ecological modifications that were developed in several more or less confined marine coastal waters situated along the mediterranean coast. Special attention was given to sulfohydrogenic bacterial populations (aerobic and anaerobic) and to various planktonic algal groups known to cause "red tides". Handling of the data by computer allowed to determine some schemes of the evolution in time of these biotopes, in function of the variables that are the most significative and representative for the observed phenomena. The search for corrective solutions necessitated the determination of explicative variables which can be acted upon and lead to the elaboration of norms. This study carried out in the natural environment was complemented by a series of laboratory experiments with mixed algal cultures. In this way it was possible to determine some modalities of the interspecific relationships that exist between the unicellular algae, and to specify the mediative role of exocellular substances in the succession of their populations.
