| Abstract |
Moss is not uncommon among most people; however, most people don’t stop to think there exist many species covered by that term. In the Netherlands alone there are already 525. There is more to moss, though, than first meets the eye. When one looks closely, one will notice different shapes of stems and leaves. In this chapter we will try to limit ourselves to the focussing (literally and figural) on the global characteristics, such as colour and shape or presence of glass pili (these are colourless leave surfaces). In order to see the difference in shape between closely related species of moss, one has to look at the length and broadness of cells and a microscope is indispensable for that purpose. We won’t go that far in this book. |
