Abstract
A total of 3 350 Serranus hepatus, collected by trawling off the north western coast of Greece (Gulf of Thermaikos) between March and December 1993, were analysed. Otoliths of 1.290 specimens were used for age and growth studies together with length-frequency data. For the validation technique, the analysis of marginal increments was selected. A single annulus is formed each year on the otolith. The growth of S. hepatus was described by a Von Bertalanffy growth curve with parameters: L= 146.56 mm; k = 0.23 and to = -2.56. The compu- ted value of natural mortality was 0.41 and the mean total mortality rate for the period studied was 0.97.
