Abstract
After the deviation in 1980 of urban waste waters of Tunis, from the north lake to the Gulf of Tunis, both water and sediment quality indicate considerable eutrophication. Our study of the water quality in the bay shows that the coastal area, situated near the most urbanised zone and the lagoon complex, is the most polluted. This pollution is especially apparent from the poor transparency of waters, high values of nutrient concentrations in waters and in sediments, the scarcity of Posidonia and a proliferation of nitrophile algae. The eastern area between Korbous and Ras El Fattass is less affected by this pollution. During one year, we controlled the physico-chemical parameters of waters, the appearance frequency of some planktonic species and the Chlorophyll-a in the coastal zone. This shows clearly that the phytoplankton growth is restricted by Phosphorus and that Nitrogen seems to be a secondary factor for its development.
