Abstract
During the last 25 years scientists have made important contributions to the protection of the Wadden Sea. Their role has changed several times, however. First they made the environmental problems a matter of public debate, then they started ecosystem research programmes, and most recently they have concentrated on management problems. After the need for protection of the Wadden Sea was recognized by society, many scientists were integrated into governmental organisations as advisors and managers, especially in the Netherlands. These new positions will have consequences for the public role of scientists and for the role of the international Wadden Sea symposia. Several possible roles are discussed.
