Abstract
The general environmental characteristics of the North Sea coastal dunes are outlined and their nature management is discussed. A right and integrated nature management of coastal dunes cannot consist of striving at a so-called natural situation, whatever that may be. It should strive at the safeguarding and, if possible, promotion of an optimal diversity in life forms, species and ecosystems. The problem is to adjust the right human interference on the right place and in the right time. What is right and what is wrong, can only be concluded by adequate ecological research. In the present situation of the dune landscape, increasing of dune mobility as well as local reintroduction of extensive grazing are valuable management tools complementing each other.
