Abstract
Pelagic larvae of Spio decoratus were collected. Their morphology appears varied, a part of them being identical to some larvae of Spio martinensis. The rearing in laboratory culture through juvenile stages, research into spawning, some additional sampling of meroplankton, lead to the following conclusions: 2 developmental patterns occurred in Spio decoratus, one in benthic, the other one pelagic; in the Gulf of Marseilles, all the pelagic larvae collected are of the same type; polymorphism depends on the duration of planktonic life; Spio decoratus and Spio martinensis are 2 distinct species, but the difference between them is very small: so an identical young benthic stage occurs in their development.
