Abstract
The digestive tract of 7 spp of Turridae (Lora rufa, Mangelia costulata, M. coarctata, M. nebula, Philbertia linearis, P. purpurea, Haedropleura septangularis) has been the object of morphological, histological and histochemical studies. Its structure, compared to Stenoglossa (Muricoidea, Buccinoidea, Volutoidea), appears much simpler. There is a strong reduction of the salivary glands and of the stomach which has only retained the typhlosolis as an ancestral structure. The poison gland is similar to that found in Conidae and Terebridae. It disappears in P. linearis where the radula and the salivary glands are also missing. Attention has been focused on the anterior part of the digestive tract and an evolutionary scheme for the proboscis of Toxoglossa is proposed. It appears that Toxoglossa originated independently of Stenoglossa, from a group possessing an acrembolic proboscis.
