Abstract
The north western waters of Sicily mix with those of the Western Mediterranean and are related to the flow of water of Atlantic origin in the South Tyrrhenian Sea. The research was to discover if sampling carried out during a very short time in that area could show evidence of correlations between hydrological and planktonic conditions. 40 samples were collected in surface waters by a high speed plankton sampler, Isaacs-Kidd model, over 350 square miles, within 48 hrs, in July 1967. Temp and salinity were measured. The study has shown different aspects of qualitative distribution, empty areas, and areas with low population densities. These patterns were related to diurnal migrations and hydrological conditions. The latter was confirmed by T/S diagrams to which the qualitative and quantitative distribution of some spp of copepods and some planktonic groups was related. The pattern of the T/S diagram also explained the variations in density of the planktonic population as a whole in a definite zone of the sampling area related to the hydrological conditions.
