Abstract
The protoconchs of several spp from the Roscoff area are observed with the scanning electron microscope: Rissoidae: Cingula semistriata, Cingula semicostata, cingulopsis fulgida, Alvania beani, Alvania crassa, Alvania carinata, Alvania punctura, Alvania zetlandica, Rissoa Guerini, Rissoa inconspicua, Rissoa lilacina, Rissoa parva, Rissoa sarai, Barleeia rubra, Cerithiopsidae, Cerithiopsis jeffreysi, Cerithiopsis tubercularis, Cerithiopsis metaxae; Triphoridae, Triphora perversa; Buccinidae, Chauvetia brunnea; Turridae, Haedropleura septangularis, Lora rufa, Mangelia coarctata and Mangelia nebula. The structure of the protoconch indicates the mode of development of 7 spp: Alvania beani, A. zetlandica, Rissoa lilacina and Mangelia coarctata have a pelagic development; Alvania carinata, Chauvetia brunnea and Lora rufa have a direct or a very short pelagic development. In Rissoidae where the identification of plankton larvae was particularly difficult, the description of the protoconchs makes diagnosis easier. Some planktonic larval shells, collected at Banyuls-sur-Mer and Brest were compared by scanning electron microscopy to the protoconchs and by this method, the planktonic larvae of Cerithiopsis metaxae were identified and the larval forms of Cerithiopsis tubercularis and C. jeffreysi formerly confused with one another, were distinguished.
