Abstract
The protoconchs and the first juvenile whorls of several prosobranch spp from the Roscoff area are observed by scanning electron microscopy: Trochidae, Calliostoma zizyphinum, Gibbula magus, G. cineraria, G. tumida, Cantharidus clelandi. Can. Exasperatus, Can. Montagui, Can. Striatus; Skeneidae, Skenea serpuloides, S. cutleriana, S. nitens; Skeneopsidae, Skeneopsis planorbis. All the studied Trochidae have a 1 whorl protoconch; the spire is rounded with an oval aperture and a fine ornamentation in G. magus and C. striatus. The presence of a more or less marked dorsal ombilic and of a beak on the aperture is characteristic of G. cineraria, G. tumida, G. clelandi, G. exasperatus and C. montagui. The protoconchs morphology of the 3 spp of Skenea is very close to the Trochidae and Rissoellidae protoconchs. All these spp have a non pelagic development or a very short one.
