Abstract
The Phyllodocidae larvae are not well known and little information is available in the literature. This paper describes the larval development of P. laminosa in the bay of Arcachon. Each larval stage has been studied. For this sp, the reproduction period extends from July to Feb, with a maximum in Aug and Sept. Larvae appear in water masses which are under oceanic influences. Trochophora and other stages are easily distinguishable among the meroplankton because of a typical pink-orange pigmentation. Pelagic lecithotrophic larvae possess very active ciliature and they display a clear positive phototactism. The metamerisation induces the immediate elongation of the metastomium; there is no endolarval metamorphosis as in other spp of the same gen Phyllodoce. At the end of the metamorphosis, when the pelagic stage is over, changes in the diet and in the mode of life have been noted; the young annelid is now predator and as the trunk is fully developed, the animal penetrates further into the sediment and lives in a burrow. Some of the specific diagnostic characters are visible from the 1st post-larval stage.
