Abstract
    The number of ribs on the shells of 30,000 C. edule from 12 stations in Brittany and the northern coast of France has been counted. This number varies from 19 to 31. The mean number differs significantly between populations. Several stations have been studied during a period of 4 yrs: this character varies also form yr to yr but the variation is not so great.
