Abstract
    A study of the symbiotic extracellular microorganisms (bacteria and Cyanophyceae) of C. nucula Schmidt (Demospongiae) has been carried out. Since the existence of pigmenting Cyanophyceae in the superficial layers of Chondrilla protects the sponge from excessive irradiation, making it fit to live on lighted bottoms, the findings of completely or partially white specimens in lighted environments are remarkable. In these specimens, the morphology and distribution of symbiotic microorganisms in their natural environment have been observed. The same study has been carried out, in experimental conditions, by the transfer of normally pigmented Chondrilla specimens from light to darkened environments.
