Abstract
The present work is a complement to a revision of Mediterranean Macropodia, published in 1964. Examination of a good number of specimens from different parts of the western European coasts showed that four species of the genus Macropodia live in this area: Macropodia rostrata, M. linaresi, M. tenuirostris and M. deflexa sp. nov. The first two species are also known from Mediterranean; the third include two forms previously considered as separate species, but herein treated as subspecies: M. tenuirostris tenuirostris, proper to Atlantic waters, M. tenuirostris longipes present both in north-eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. The fourth species, M. deflexa sp. nov., has been in the past erroneously mentioned as M. aegyptia, actually synonym of a strictly Mediterranean species. Description or diagnosis is given for each species or subspecies, together with major synonymy and references, distribution and taxonomical remarks (affiities, previous confusions, and variations). An identification key is provided.
