Abstract
The reaction of C. crangon to a large amount of several metals had been studied on two populations, from Bay of Seine and from Estuary of Penze (North Finistere, Brittany). Iron and zinc (the latter found only in Crangon from Bay of Seine) accumulated in different organs. The normal physiological process can explain to a great extent the different concentrations: ferric iron at the gill surface, iron in granular and microparticular forms in some hepatopancreatic cells, zinc in muscles and hepatopancreas. However, the zinc concentrations found only in the Bay of Seine population must be related to its excess in the environment. The fixation of zinc in the antennal gland, independently of the excretion of zinc by urine and through gills, however, appears as a detoxification process correlated with an environmental pollution.
