Abstract
The development of both B. plumosa and B. hypnoides collected along the coasts of Brittany, has been studied in order to perform caryological observations. It has been possible to confirm, after Rietema's conclusions, the heteromorphic life history formed by the well known erected gametophytic thallus alternating with a prostrate filamentous and one nucleate microthallus (producing or not, asexual stephonokontic zoids). Further, the parthenogenetic development of gametes (male as well as female) observed facultatively and irregularly in B. plumosa, does not disturb the alternance of the two stages. The meiosis has been identified at gamete formation: then it has been possible to conclude that the gametophytic thallus and the whole life history are diploid (B. plumosa: 2n = 14; B. hypnoides: 2n = 12) and, on the other hand, the morphological life history and the nuclear phases are independent one from the other.
