Abstract
    Acrylamide electrophoresis is used to determine the esterase isozymes present in three species of the intertidal crustacea Jaera albifrons (Isopoda). Seven regions can be recognized on gels and a maximum of bands is found with alpha naphtyl acetate as substrate. The capacity of ester hydrolysis is seen to decline gradually with successively longer chain carbon substrates except for region II (maximum activity with alpha naphtyl caprylate). These results seem to be consistent with Choudbury's suggestion that non specific esterases all belong to one enzyme system whose structure is built on a subunit structure and exhibit overlapping specificities though sharing of common subunits. A genetic analysis shows that five independant autosomal loci control the variations at polymorphic regions (regions I, II, III and IV) in the three species.
